CMS Reminder

Since 2008, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) policy states that Medicare does not cover audiological diagnostic tests billed incident to a physician’s service. The specific text from the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual is provided here: “Audiological diagnostic tests are not covered under the benefit for services incident to a physician’s service (described in Pub. 100-02, chapter 15, section 60), because they have their own benefit as “other diagnostic tests”. See Pub. 100-04, chapter 13 for general diagnostic test policies.”
Audiology diagnostic tests must be billed using the NPI of the audiologist who provided the service even when the audiologist is the employee of a physician. Reimbursement is the same if billed under the NPI of the audiologist.
